Grammaire #4 - Révision des adjectifs

Aujourd'hui on a revu les adjectifs et leur placement.  J'ai donné ces informations aux 2 (!) élèves qui étaient en classe aujourd'hui.  Les autres, vous nous avez manqué!

Adjectives are placed BEFORE or AFTER the noun.

Adjectives placed BEFORE can use the acronym BAGS (adjectives referring to beauty, age, goodness, size).

These adjectives include, but are not limited to, beau, bon, gentil, grand, gros, jeune, joli, long, mauvais, nouveau, petit, vieux, ancien, brave, autre, dernier, chaque, plusieurs, premier...

ADJECTIVES take either a MASCULINE or a FEMININE form.  Generally adjectives can be changed from M - F by looking at these rules:

er - ère  (dernier - dernière)
eur, eux - euse (chanteur - chanteuse, heureux, heureuse)
teur - trice (protecteur - protectrice)
f- ve (vif - vive, naif - naive)
el, il, en, et, on, as, os, os, sot - double the final consonant and add an e  (cruel - cruelle, gentil - gentille, ancien- ancienne, muet - muette, gros - grosse)
g - gue (long- longue)

Some adjectives are IRREGULAR and follow no rules at all...
blanc - blanche
doux - douce
sec- sèche
frais - fraîche
franc - franche
faux - fausse
roux - rousse
fou - folle
beau ou bel - belle
nouveau ou nouvel - nouvelle
vieux ou vieil - vieille
grec - grecque
public - publique

To change adjectives from singular to plural, follow these general rules:

If it ends in s or x, no change (heureux, gros)
If it ends in au, al it becomes aux (nouveau - nouveaux, oral - oraux)

Note the following exceptions:
fatal(s)
final(s)
naval(s)
